Clamping complex and sensitive components in a space-saving manner

Clamp and support additional clamping points securely

Every single day workers have to deal with spatial constraints caused by the machine, the component, and even the fixture while clamping workpieces. This handicap can quickly turn into a challenge when the task is to clamp complex components. The floating clamps made by Erwin Halder KG are uniquely suited to handle additional clamping points and clamp components that are extra thin and particularly sensitive to bending. The new compact design of these products makes them a superb choice for work in limited space.

A common approach to clamp thin and complex components with additional clamping points (more than three) is to use dial gauges to ensure precision. The downside of this method is that it is highly involved, unreliable and less than economical. The floating clamps made by Erwin Halder KG offer tremendous workflow advantages and are the best possible choice for such complex clamping situations. Thanks to their compact design, they are the perfect solution to the problem of securely supporting and clamping additional clamping points found, for example, on ribs, beads and shackles. They reliably prevent vibrations and chatter marks and ensure that even thin-walled workpiece can be processed with flawless reliability. Better still, they extend the service life of the tools and enhance the surface quality of the workpieces.

“Their compact design makes our floating clamps the tools of choice for both stationary and modular fixtures - such as our V70 system - used in limited space scenarios thanks to their low construction height and the attachment above the base. They also facilitate subsequent assembly into fixtures whose construction height has already been set”, explains Bernd Janner, Sales Manager at Erwin Halder KG.

The component defines the clamping position by its three-point support. Spring force causes the clamp to “floatingly” contour to the component before being tightened. This keeps the workpiece from becoming warped or deformed. The floating clamps with a compact design engineered by Erwin Halder KG come in two versions: one with combined and one with separate clamping and locking. The floating clamp with combined clamping and locking (red anodised aluminium housing) is the best match for more stable components. It clamps and locks the workpiece in one single step. Users who need to clamp components that are extremely sensitive to bending should opt for the floating clamp with separate clamping and locking (blue anodised aluminium housing). These products make it possible to set the clamping force independently of the locking, allowing, for instance, for clamping forces as low as 10 Nm.

Both version boast a precisely ground body and clamping jaws made of case-hardened steel that has been nitrided and treated with manganese phosphate. The floating clamps are attached to the fixture via several M6 threads. The height limit stop and the rotating area of the adjusting sleeve can be adjusted and fixed in place using set screws. These attributes let them deliver a high repeatability of the clamping position. Once fixed in place, the adjusting sleeve will have a rotating area of 110°. Bernd Janner: “We also offer customised solutions - such as modified clamping jaws with an extended clamping range and much more - that are capable of satisfying any specific requirements the user may have.”
